The Common Data Element (CDE) Curation Tool is an interactive metadata management tool that supports research initiatives launched by the National Cancer Institute. The CDE Curation Tool helps data administrators create, edit, and manage data elements in the Cancer Data Standards Repository (caDSR).
The effective use of large quantities of disparate data requires standardization and management. Research organizations, federal agencies, and academic institutions use the CDE Curation Tool to standardize data objects and to ensure ISO/IEC 11179 compliance. ISO/IEC 11179 specifies metadata descriptions and relationships to facilitate the sharing of data across diverse systems and people.
Effective metadata management requires a data administrator to know how metadata is used within legacy software applications and other representations, such as UML models. Semantic relationships exist among the various components of metadata. The CDE Curation Tool provides definition, modification, tracking, and validation capabilities to help data users and producers manage their application metadata.
The National Cancer Institute selected ScenPro to design, implement, and maintain the CDE Curation Tool based on our expertise in the medical domain and our rigorous application of the Scenario-based Engineering Process. ScenPro conducted formal knowledge acquisition sessions, gathered user requirements, created system prototypes, reviewed the prototypes with shareholders, scoped functionality, coded solutions, performed unit and system testing, and delivered and deployed the CDE Curation Tool at NCI. ScenPro continues to be responsible for maintaining and upgrading the CDE Curation Tool.
